The term contrasts in method with curative and palliative medicine, and in scope with public health methods (which work at the level of population health rather than individual health).

Physicians use a stethoscope as part of a non-invasive examination procedure. Commonly, doctors will listen for sounds of congestion in the lungs and irregular heartbeats. Nurses may also use stethoscopes to listen for restored blood flow during blood pressure checks.
